Things Parents Should Pay Attention to Improve Their Children’s Academic Performance

Education is one of the most important things in the growth of children. This education is the foundation for becoming a good person and succeeding in life. The first step towards this should start at home. That is why the role of parents in the field of children’s education becomes very important. There are some important things that parents should pay attention to in their children’s academic performance. All parents should try to recognize and fulfill them.

Pope John Paul II says: “The family is the first and most important school of education”. Parents can have a lot of influence on their children’s learning. For children, their first school is their home. Therefore, if they want their children to be good at learning, the first thing parents should pay attention to is to provide a very quiet, peaceful, secluded and calm family environment that is suitable for them to study. It is imperative for parents to provide a quiet environment suitable for learning for their children. For this, they need to avoid all things that cause obstacles in learning, such as television and mobile phones. Because only children who grow up in a very quiet environment can prove their ability in learning. However, children who grow up in a troubled environment will not only have shortcomings in learning, but they are also likely to become a headache in school, family and society. Therefore, it is an important duty of parents to provide a suitable and very calm family environment for their children to help them learn.

Secondly, we should not try to blame our children by comparing them with other children. Parents should never be the ones who blame them and isolate them by looking at their shortcomings. Because our children can never be like other children. Comparing them like that will never benefit them. On the contrary, it will put more pressure on them and lead them to harm. Therefore, if we want to make our children excel, we need to be careful not to compare them and blame them. Especially, if there are children with any kind of learning disability, parents should be careful to give them special attention and consideration. Parents should be able to encourage their achievements without discouraging them by giving them confidence. Thus, it is essential for parents to have a positive approach to learning.

Thirdly, it is the duty of parents to provide a facility for our children to play and enjoy learning. However, many parents are overly concerned about their children and force them to focus on their studies all the time, not letting them play. Another important duty of parents is to provide a facility for their children to socialize, play, have fun, and enjoy learning by arranging a specific time for games and studies without giving such tension to their children. However, parents need to have a clear understanding of their children’s associations and how their children spend their time.

Fourth, parents need to help their children plan a proper schedule for their studies. It is very important to teach children to be punctual. It is the responsibility of parents to prepare a timetable of what to do every day and at what time and help them work accordingly. This will help children grow up to be responsible, self-controlled, and have a sense of priority.
Fifth, parents should be able to provide psychological support for their children’s studies. Not all children are the same in terms of studies. Many children may experience mental stress such as lack of attention and memory loss. In such situations, parents need to be careful to approach them patiently, understand their state of mind, and provide tutoring or counseling if necessary.

Sixth, parents need to be careful not to focus their children only on studies and encourage their other talents. Parents need to help their children grow in that way by giving them opportunities in the fields of sports, art, music, drawing, and acting. Not just textbook knowledge, but critical thinking, problem-solving skills, communication skills, and emotional development are also important. That way, we can help them grow into more capable and confident individuals, without their studies becoming a bore or burden.

Seventh, parents should be able to communicate with their children on a regular basis regarding their studies. Parents should have a clear understanding of how their children are studying, how they are performing in class, and what their difficulties are in studying. Parents should be careful to constantly inquire and talk to their children about such things. It is also good to maintain a cooperation with the teachers at the school in these matters.

Eighth, parents should set a specific goal for their children. Parents should help their children set the right goal and study accordingly. Because children themselves may not be able to identify their goal. Because a life without a goal is like a ship without a captain. Therefore, helping their children set their goals is another important duty of parents.

Proverbs 4:7 says: “The acquisition of wisdom is the most important thing. Acquire wisdom at all costs.” Along with material knowledge, parents should pay attention to raising their children in divine knowledge. Parents also need to teach their children the lessons necessary for spiritual growth and a godly life. Pope Benedict XVI says: “True education is not only the transmission of knowledge, but also the teaching of love and discovery of truth, goodness and beauty”.

Therefore, as parents, we can strive to play a decisive role in our children’s learning through good example. We can make it easier for our children to learn through appropriate interventions, support and expectations. Children’s learning is more than just acquiring knowledge; it is essential for their personal development and future life. By recognizing that each child is different, by providing support according to their aptitudes and learning styles, and by guiding them with the right guidelines, we can develop all of our children’s talents and build a successful life in the future. In this way, may we be able to raise our children with hope and confidence and instill in them a good personality.
